Evernote’s coffee bar and break areas are clad with Douglas fir plywood, the texture and grain of which provides its own graphic patterns. In a clean and modern context, construction materials may acquire the design impact of richer finishes. We began with the concept of making the process of construction part of the aesthetic. Our challenge was to design an office commensurate with Evernote’s soaring profile-on what was essentially a start-up budget and schedule.

With the company moving into a much larger building than it had previously occupied, and with business booming, Evernote needed to be up and running in its new space with a minimum of downtime. Evernote is an online data storage company that allows its users to save (and retrieve) everything from Post-It notes to photographs to formal documents in the Cloud. Here's some text about the project from Studio O+A:Īt Evernote in Redwood City, California, the strict budget and swift pace of construction helped determine the direction of the design. The emphasis throughout the office is on circulation - they really want to encourage people to move around, meet with each other, talk with each other so we thought coffee and donuts in the lobby would help with that. "Evernote doesn’t have a reception desk in the traditional sense. The reception area is the most innovative part of the project, Cherry says. We wanted to create a clean palette for them to layer in their work, much like their product, which creates layers of personal documents and pictures unique to every user." And in fact they have an amazing whiteboard artist on staff who creates beautiful murals."Ĭherry describes the look of the new space as "Simple, clean, bright, airy. Anywhere you have an idea you can jot it down. In my case, that’s a bright green for open projects and a big pause button for those awaiting reply."We put in lots of different types of meeting spaces - formal, informal, collaborative, concentrative," says Cherry. What this means is that you can add emojis to a tag and have it light up on your dashboard. While Evernote doesn’t have an official colour coding feature, it does support the emoji keyboard. Until Evernote introduces custom styles, themes or colour pickers, we’ll just have to sit tight and make do with this nifty hack. It’s not like there hasn’t been considerable demand from its customer base. Apple introduced tagging years ago so it’s odd that Evernote continue to stick with their black and grey palette. With up to a dozen on the go, the best way for me to quickly see a project’s status is with colour.Ĭolour coding isn’t rocket science. Like many freelancers, it’s important for me to distinguish between open projects, ones awaiting payment and ones awaiting a reply. And yet, in spite of the convenience, one thing about Evernote continues to bug me: its lack of colour. Evernote lets you attach documents, emails, photos in neat little bundles, all the while keeping them organised with tags.

Not a day goes by that I don’t alter a notebook, tick off a “to do” or update a client status.

It’s a fantastic note-keeping software that integrates seamlessly with other apps. Whether that’s writing things down, reminder apps, calendars or sticky notes, a person’s system is the combination of tools and software that helps them stay organised.

However you work on the computer, chances are you have a system.
